Milwaukee Instruments digital refractometers and analog hand held refractometers can measure Brix, salinity, glucose, sugar, invert sugar, alcohol, Beer, wine and more.

How does a refractometer work?
Refractometers measure the refractive index of a solution. Refractive Index is an optical characteristic of a substance and the number of dissolved  articles in it. Refractive Index is defined as the ratio of the speed of light in empty space to the speed of light in the substance. A result of this property is that light will “bend”, or change direction, when it travels through a substance of different refractive index. This is called refraction.

How to use a refractometer?
For analog hand held refractometers, use the supplied dropper pipette to release one or two drops of the sample to the clear glass (prism) of the refractometer and close the cover plate. Look at the scale through the eyepiece and read the scale where the level intercepts it.
For digital refractometers, first wipe off prism surface located at the bottom of the sample well. Use the provided pipette to drip the sample onto the prism surface, fill the well completely. Press the READ key to see the result on display.
